Organic Hair Care is a growing trend amongst the upper middle class. Shoppers have become more educated and made the decision to support green living in a permanent way. Todays commercial soaps and shampoos have many harsh and toxic chemicals in their formulations. This site exists to help educate people about the effects of the chemicals and to show them great organic hair products to replace them with. Should you come across a great product or have a great story, please send contributions to admin@organichaircare.org

Leek woman with natural hair. If that's not organic, I do not know what is.

The Green Movement and Organic Hair Shampoo

The idea of using sustainable and healthy resources has finally caught the mainstream of American. Average working people are finally starting to make purchases with more thought into it. The goal isn't always about price, but is also about what is good for everyone.

Hair shampoo has been one of the benefactors of this trend. People are realizing that large companies are producing items that are toxic and irritating to a lot of people. Large companies have on goal in mind and that is to make money. They need to make a great product to sell it, but now that people care about the entire picture of how a company operates it is changing consumer behavior.

Commercial Detergents are Harsh

Soap and shampoo are both really just detergents. They are made from laboratory produced chemicals like sodium laureth sulfate and ammonium laureth sulfate. Both of these products are harsh on the skin and cause many people to have irritated skin. Does your head or face itch for no apparent reason? Many people don't realize it is the alkali in the soaps that is bothering them. Others have learned to live with it and don't realize that something is even bothering them.

Glycerin

Glycerin is removed from commercial soaps. For example, Ivory (made by Proctor and Gamble), had no glycerin in the soap for many years until recently. Their idea was that they wanted the soap to be less expensive. Even though Ivory is one of the purest commercially made soaps and works quite will, it was also one of the harshest on the skin. Almost everyone knows how Ivory soap can totally dry out your skin. Ivory soap of today has added some glycerin into the bar and it has made it not quite as buoyant.

Natural or organic made soaps will cost more, but have more glycerin. Glycerin is important because it takes moisture from the air. It is one of the main ingredients in lotions and cosmetics because it is so good at moisturizing the skin. So, if you want moisturizing soaps look for glycerin in the ingredient list.

Cancer Causing Agents

There are cancer causing agents in commercially made soaps, shampoos, and conditioners. Some companies use sodium laureth sulfate that is laced with dioxane (a cancer causing agent). It is a proven fact that the skin is great at absorbing toxins. When you read a bottle of shampoo and don't know what half the stuff is or how it is made you are basically trusting a large corporation with your health. It is basically not a good idea. It is much better to have a short list of ingredients you understand and know won't hurt you. Many of the soapless alcohol based antibacterial products are absorbed quickly into the skin and send toxins to the liver. Of course a healthy person can handle it, but it isn't good for you and children and those that are less healthy are at much higher risks. In addition, sodium laureth sulfate is bad for the eyes and can damage the cornea if not irrigated quickly. This can be especially troublesome for children. Another product titanium dioxide has been proven to cause lower rates of fertility. It is a wonder that people don't worry about these products. The main reason for all of this is that people are susceptible to effective marketing and cultural norms and most of all low prices. Do you know anyone that has enough money?

Natural Soaps

All natural soaps are made of lye, water, and oil and almost all soaps are actually detergents made of petroleum and fragrances. When buying soap, look for naturally made soap that is only made of these basic ingredients.

Organic Hair and Soap Regulation

There is virtually no regulation in the area of organic cosmetics. The word organic can mean anything the manufacturer wants it to mean. For that reason, most of the “organic shampoos and soaps” are actually not much different than regular shampoos and soaps. They are usually marketed with an organic theme such as our product is made with real honey and oatmeal or try our natural strawberry smell ocean breeze shampoo.

The way to know what you are buying is to read the ingredients. If you can't pronounce them or know what they are, then its not an organic product.

Most of the organic shampoos, conditioners, and hair gels are a little less toxic. The companies have tried to tone down the toxicity, but most of them are made in the same basic way. Why? Scientifically, current production methods are the most profitable and, in addition, not a lot of people want to buy a ten dollar bottle of shampoo.

Organic Ingredients for Hair and Soap

You can make almost everything you need from common household items. The reason most people don't is that it takes more time and is less convenient. Here are some of the more popular organic shampoo and soap ingredients.

Honey: Sweet and Binds Protein
Lavender: Fragrance
Tea Tree Oil: Antibacterial
Sulfur: Antibacterial
Oatmeal: Scrubbing Power
Olive Oil: Moisturizer
Flax Oil: Moisturizer and Hair Gel
Eggs: Protein Nourishment
Beer: Hair Nourishment
Coconut Oil: Great Fragrance
Apple Cider Vinegar: Acidic Nature Makes Hair Shiny

Summary: There are a lot of good reasons to find good organic and natural soap products. They are healthier to the body, they are more soothing to the senses, and your skin and hair will thank you. Don't get caught up in marketing hype. Read labels and look for simple ingredients you know and understand.
