Organic Hair Care is a growing trend amongst the upper middle class. Shoppers have become more educated and made the decision to support green living in a permanent way. Todays commercial soaps and shampoos have many harsh and toxic chemicals in their formulations. This site exists to help educate people about the effects of the chemicals and to show them great organic hair products to replace them with. Should you come across a great product or have a great story, please send contributions to admin@organichaircare.org

Leek woman with natural hair. If that's not organic, I do not know what is.

Organic Conditioner

Like shampoo, many commercial conditioners carry carcinogens, toxins, and other things that are harmful to the body. You should read the ingredients and know what you are buying. It is very difficult because there are so many ingredients. Wouldn't it be nice if the retailer would post a copy of the ingredients, what they do to you, how safe they are etc?

Some of the commercial conditioners have Methenamine (cancer causing agent) and other toxic chemicals like DMD Hydantoin and Cocamidopropyl Betaine. What makes the ingredients dangerous is that they are transferred into the blood stream by skin contact. In addition, the process is acclerated with propellants like Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Propylene Glycol, and Tetrasodium Edta. In addition, Titanium Dioxide is known to decrease fertility and it is in a lot of commercial hair conditioners.

Natural Conditioners

There are natural hair conditioner alternatives. Since hair is made of a protein called Keratin, many natural conditioners will have protein like eggs, honey, and natural oils. The most popular ingredients for home conditioners are honey, milk, eggs, beer, jojoba, olive oil, sunflower oil, coconut milk, and cider vinegar.

I used to take eggs and whip them up with a beater and apply to hair. It was a great way to make the hair feel silky and smooth. Beer is good for the hair because it softens it and makes it shiny. Honey is sticky and helps hold in moisturizers. Avocado is also widely used with coconut milk and a little honey. You can try different concoctions. You will find that home remedies work great and are time consuming.
